Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh amidst the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest. It is surrounded by the scenic Eastern Ghats on three sides and mighty Bay of Bengal on the fourth side. It is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi and was declared open for the public on May 19, 1977. The park covers an area of 625 acres. It is a major tourist attraction of the city.

The park has the distinction of being the largest fenced Zoo Park of India. It is a peaceful abode for animals and visitors too. Different species of animals are present in the zoo in very large number. The Zoo has been separated into different complexes to exhibit different varieties of wildlife. One of them is the Cat Enclosure, which includes tigers, lions, leopards and jaguars. The Primates complex comprises of Bonnet Monkey, Rhesus Monkey and Langur. It also exhibits fauna like Olives, Baboons and Mandrills. Then, the Birds Enclosure is there, which is filled with variety of birds like Hornbills, Peacocks, Painted Storks, Emu, Pelicans, Ostrich and Love birds. The Bear complex is the abode of Sloth bears and Himalayan Black bears. The Herbivores section has Bisons, Sambar Deer, Thamin Deer, Elephants, Nilgai, Girrafes and Hippopotamus. The Lesser Carnivores section boasts of Striped Hyenas and Jackals. The Reptile Complex consists of Crocodiles, Land Tortoise, Pythons, Snakes, Terrapins and Monitor Lizards. A Nocturnal Animal House is also there in the zoo which consists of Porcupines, Owls and Civets.

A special mini train also runs around the Zoological Park to facilitate people to feel and watch the beauty of wildlife in an open top train. There is also a Biosphere Reserve Centre and a Library in the Zoo.


The park is open for public from 9AM to 5PM every day except Monday.

How to Reach

The Zoological Park is situated 4 km away from the Visakhapatnam Railway Station. It is on NH-5 near Madhurawada. There are two entrance and exit gates, one towards NH-5 and the other towards the Beach Road at Sagarnagar. You can also reach the park through city transport buses that ply from the city frequently. The best way to reach here is by your own vehicle like car or bike.
