Pandavgad Falls are located near the Owe Camp in Raigad district of Maharashta and is 73 km away from Alibag, its district headquarters. The falls are situated in amidst of dense forests and huge mountain chains. The falls are 350 feet high and can be seen through the road connecting Thane and Belapur. The falls are located on a hilly region and have a well known cave at its base. These falls are different from other waterfalls in the state due to their unique structure. Nangrya is the subordinate waterfall that is found in this area. There is a scenic fort situated on top of the mountains. The fort is located in the Wai village. You can also find these foaming white waterfalls covered with beautiful cliffs and rocky surfaces, when you travel along the road connecting Wai and Maandhardev.
It is believed that the Pandava kings had chosen the caves beneath these waterfalls as the place to stay when they were on exile. That’s why, the falls are named as Pandavgad falls after them. These waterfalls are said to be built by Shilahar King Bhoj II during the late 11th century. The historic Pandavgad fort is in close vicinity to these waterfalls. The Shilahar rulers vanquished the Chalukyan kingdom and then the fort came into existence. In 1673, this fort came under the safe hands of the Maratha kings and it became a part of the Swarajya kingdom. But, soon at the start of the 17th century, this fort came under the merciless rule of Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Later, it was again conquered by the great Maratha Emperor, Chhattrapati Shahu Maharaj. In 1818, this fort came under the British rule and remained its part till the Independence.
Pandavgad Falls are one of the most exquisite falls in India and a great weekend picnic spot. These falls are worth watch during monsoons.
