Raymond Tomb

Raymond Tomb located near Asman Garh Palace at Mussa Ram Bagh in Hyderabad. It was constructed in the year 1798 as memory of Raymond death. The tomb is about 60 meters long, 30 meters wide and 10 meters high and is made of black granite where a symbol “JR” can be seen on the tomb.

Raymond with other name known as Michel Joachim Marie Raymond was a French man came to Pondicherry, India in the year 1775 along with his brother saying his father that he would become a merchant, but later he joined in the army of Nizam as a normal soldier in the year 1786 and then in short period of span he was given 300 soldiers to command. He then became close friend to the second Nizam Ali Khan and also became close to the local people and then he became the general in the Nizam’s army in the year 1796. But in the year 1798 he was dead, on the memory of Raymond the tomb was constructed.

People of city have lot of respects towards Raymond and they even light up candles every year on the death anniversary of Raymond near the tomb. There is also French garden and military barracks near the tomb which has now become a beautiful and attractive garden, it is an additional attraction for the tomb, Raymond and his men stayed here during their time.

In the year 2001, the tomb was destructed because of heavy rains and was not maintained properly, but later in 2003 the monument was repaired and is now maintained by the department of Archaeology and Tourism and has now became one of the tourist attractions of Hyderabad.
