Vontimitta is situated in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. It is located at a distance of about 26 km from Kadapa, its district headquarters. Vontimitta is a place of historical and spiritual importance. It is holy abode to a temple of Lord Sri Rama. The temple is some 450 years old and the presiding deity is called as Kodanda Rama Swamy. According to a legend, the two disciples of lord Rama, Vontudu and Mittudu, had built the temple in one single day. After constructing it, they sacrificed their lives in the name of lord and transformed into statues. These statues can be seen even today as soon as you enter the temple. This temple is the only holy place in the country where Sri Seeta Rama Kalyanam is held in the night.
Vontimitta has a high importance as the place where the Kishkinda Khanda, one of the seven khandas of Ramayana happened. A famous French traveler named Tavernier, had visited this abode in 1652 and described the temple as one of the most exquisite temples in India. He was astonished by the devotion and dedication of the people here towards the Lord.
The Vontimitta Kodanda Rama Swamy temple, which is built with some 32 pillars, is extremely high. The temple is also called as Madhya Ranga Mandapam. Annamacharya, the great devotee of Lord Sri Rama, is related to this temple. It is also believed that the idol of Lord Sri Rama was installed by Lord Jambuvantha. The Archaeological Survey of India has declared this temple as an Ancient Monument. The temple’s Garbhagudi has the idols of Lord Sri Rama, Lakshmana and Goddess Sita incised from one rock. There is also an Anjaneya Temple in the premises. You can see the idol of Vigneshwara in a dancing posture in the main mandapam of the temple. The mandapam was constructed by Vijayanagar rulers. This temple is also the only Rama temple all over India where the idol of Lord Sri Rama is without Lord Anjaneya Swamy at his side.
